The combination of physical properties and cost competitiveness has made polypropylene a popular material for many furniture applications. A variety of Corton® and Polycomp® grades are supplied for outdoor furniture.

This market, with its wide design range of monobloc chairs and table settings, is a significant market. Even though high volumes and the competitive nature of this market have influenced price levels, these items still require significant technical input to design materials for rigidity, strength, appearance and performance.

PolyPacific's expertise in manufacturing polypropylene colour compounds and experience in tailoring UV systems provides manufacturers with a wide choice of colours in many different compounds for either indoor or outdoor furniture applications.
More recently PolyPacific has developed Flame Retardant grades that can be UV stabilised. Previously the technology for flame retardancy interacted with the UV stabilisers and hence caused poor weathering. For certain seating applications there can be a requirement for modified burning as well as outdoor weathering performance. Particular standards and performance criteria should be carefully specified and discussed with PolyPacific in order to assess the suitability of these new grades.
PolyPacific's grades are being used in a wide variety of furniture applications with perhaps the most visible being the seating in the Great Southern Stand at the huge Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia"s premier sporting venue, and more recently, Docklands and other international stadia.
Here, a through-coloured Retpol® flame retardent polypropylene compound with excelllent UV stability was chosen to withstand the harsh Australian climate with its hot summers and high UV intensity.
PolyPacific's analytical laboratories were able to verify the level and the dispersion of the UV stabilisers in the moulded seat to ensure the performance of the finished product.
